Biking the Cove

At Chubb Adventures, we’re all about making the most of the Smoky Mountains and few experiences capture the magic of the region quite like biking through Cades Cove. We agree that this was one of the best days; top 10 for sure! Cades Cove is one of our favorite places on earth already, this made it magical. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just want to cruise under the canopy of century-old trees, this is one ride you’ll never forget.

Why Bike Cades Cove?

Imagine pedaling along a quiet, scenic loop as wildlife grazes in open meadows, mist hugs the mountains, and historic cabins whisper stories from the past. That’s Cades Cove.

Chad described it best…you are riding along under the trees in the shade, you petal up a gentle hill and a you uncontrollably smile as you descend on a winding road, your bike is now headed into the sunlight past the canopy of trees at about 25mph. Not much in life can replicate the amazing feelings that this place can bring.

Located just 30 minutes from the heart of Pigeon Forge, this 11-mile one-way loop in Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers a perfect blend of nature, history, and peace. And for cyclists? It’s paradise.

Best Time to Go: Vehicle-Free Wednesdays

From early May through late September, every Wednesday is vehicle-free. That means no traffic just you, your bike, and the sounds of nature. It’s a favorite time for locals and guests alike to explore without the hustle and bustle.

Tip: Arrive early to enjoy the peaceful morning light and cooler temps. Plus parking is a bit touch and go the later in the day you arrive. The sunrise views are worth the wake-up call.

What You’ll See

Momma Bear

Bears, bears, and more bears. White-tailed deer grazing in the meadows, along with horses, wild turkeys, and OH did I mention bears?! Historic churches and cabins from early settler days. Breathtaking mountain backdrops. Rolling hills, open fields, and wildflowers. A gentleman who visits often on no vehicle days pointed out an area of orange orchids.

The loop is mostly paved with a few gentle inclines. You’ll want to stop often, not because it’s hard but because there’s just so much beauty to take in. The water rushing over a waterfall or some cascades in the streams is something you miss in a vehicle, but on bike, you are fully immersed.

Bring or Rent a Bike

If you didn’t bring your own bike, no worries! Cades Cove Trading Company offers bike rentals right at the entrance (seasonal availability), including adult bikes, kids’ sizes, and even tag-alongs for little ones.

We are of the age group that spend all day on bikes as kids. Where the street lights meant to return home after a long day of adventuring. Thus, we wanted to try out some e-bikes to bring back that fun loving adventurous spirit. We now believe this is the only way to go! Of course if you are not able to pack your bike, there are even e-bike rentals. But, again, rent early, in summer these places sell out frequently and many weeks in advance.

Pack Smart

Here’s a quick packing list to make your ride smooth and safe:

  • Refillable water bottles (there are limited water stations)
  • Lightweight backpack of bike basket
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Helmet (required for kids under 16, but smart for all)
  • Camera or phone for photos (you’ll want them!)

Make a Day of It

We biked the Cove three times, and if our batteries would have held longer; we may have stayed even longer. After your ride, grab a snack or picnic at the Cades Cove picnic area or take a short hike to Abrams Falls. You can even spend time exploring more of the national park or head back to your cozy cabin at Chubb Adventures to relax in the hot tub and relive the highlights of your ride. Trust us, you’ll be laughing and talking about all of your favorite moments during this adventure for quite some time.

Local Tip: Let the Mountains Set the Pace

Biking in Cades Cove isn’t about speed it’s about presence. Let yourself slow down. Let the mountains breathe for you. Let the silence fill you up. Take it all in.

These mountains have an energy about them. One that seeks to ground you in peace. We live and work in a chaotic world each day. Some of our guests tell us it has been years since the last time they were able to take a vacation. Self care and presence recharges our batteries. This immersive mountain experience, does just that.

Ready to Ride?

Biking Cades Cove is a Smoky Mountain tradition and one we highly recommend for couples, families, and solo travelers alike. It’s the perfect mix of adventure, serenity, and local charm. The laughter heard from fellow cyclists and kiddos alike, can be heard throughout the Cove.
